2009 River Festival—More Fun Planned!!!

The River Festival will be held August 21, 22, 2009. The event begins Friday afternoon with signups beginning at 4 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., we will again have a Cajun Shrimp Boil open to the public, just 750 dinners will be sold; Great Duck Race will take place at 7:30 p.m.; Fireants in Concert at 5:30 p.m.; and Fireworks at dark have been a great success although we were unable to have them last year it looks as though they will be back again this year. Saturday, will be the 6th Annual "Run with the Horses Marathon" to take place across the Wild Horse Loop Tour. This year the run will begin and end next to Evers Park. This event will also include a ½ Marathon and a 10 K run and will begin at 6 a.m. Last year we had 175 participants, 160 of them from out of state! Numbers were down slightly last year due to the high cost of fuel. The entry forms are steadily coming in! We are also very excited to announce that the elite running team for Anheuser-Bush’s "180 Running Team" is participating with about 20 runners coming in from the Chicago area. Where else can you "Run with the Horses"! This year marathon and ½ marathon runners will receive a very nice wind-shirt and finishing medal. There are also medals awarded in various categories.

The "Lucky 13" Horse Poker Run is in its 4th year with over 65 participants. The "Lucky 13" Poker Run will begin near the Hampton Inn and Suites, up the Wild Horse Loop Tour and the turn west at the top. Riders then follow along the top of the Palisades going only to the 6.5 mile point and then turn around and head back down the road. Beverages and snacks are at each stop. The best Poker hand in the first three places will split the pot. Hats will be given to each person that enters the poker run.

Photos from the Sweetwater County Photo Contest will be unveiled on Friday at 4 p.m. Then all photos entered will be displayed in the informaiton tent on the Island. The photographer’s names as well as winners will be noted on the photos. They will remain on display during the River Fest Activities.

The River Festival will also have some great Kids Games during Friday and Saturday. The Games are FREE and all that play receives a prize!! New this year will be the addition of special kids games, a hula hoop contest, watermelon eating contest and sack race are just some of the special additions to the kids games. Special prizes will be given out for those as well.

The Brew Fest now in its 5th year will take place on the 22nd Dave Johnson, Chairperson for the Brew Fest feels confident that we may have fifteen brewers from Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Colorado.

Dog Fetching Competitions have been very popular and those will again take place. Dogs will participate in a timed fetching event both in the water and on land. We would like to add a distant jump and are working on the logistics. The addition of the Dog Show was a tremendous hit and was expanded last year with even more categories and participants.

Another new addition to the River Festival will be the "Extreme Trail Challenge". This event is for all you horse lovers. The event will take place just north of Evers Park in the open lot. Riders and their horses will navigate a number of "obstacles", for instance they will have to take a bag of garbage from one garbage can and move it to another, or back your horse through a L-shape path made of hay! There will be several stations that you will need to negotiate and participants will be judge on time and on how well your horse goes through each station. The event will be a jackpot with 60% of the entry fee going back to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

The Street Dream Car Show will also be taking place during the River Festival in Evers Park and Art on the Green will be happening in the Pavilion.

Sweetwater County Leadership Class Tours Industry

The Sweetwater County Leadership Class has completed the 6-month course and will be graduating soon. The group traveled to Moneyhun Welding, Jim Bridger Power Plant, and Black Butte May 28th. The Recreation Day took them to Museums, Recreation Centers and across the Wild Horse Loop Tour. They also completed a couple of great class projects. Most of the group was able to help the Young at Heart Senior Center move into their new building. Those that couldn’t help out with that project cleaned out and rearranged the Green River Chamber’s storage unit. The second group probably wished they had been able to move the seniors! Good job class.

The Green River Chamber, Rock Springs Chamber and SWEDA will begin recruiting the 2010 class in November, so if you are interested in participating give us a call and we will put you down, class size is limited.

Run Like Ralph

By Tom Reilly, author of “Crush Price Objections.”

St. Louis has been hot and humid for the past two weeks, and today promises to be the hottest day of the year with a projected heat index of
110 degrees Fahrenheit. It was a good day to get out early for my morning walk. About 20 minutes into the walk, I saw Ralph.

Ralph is a remarkable 85 year-old man. Reaching 85 is a feat in itself, but it is how Ralph has reached and lives his ninth decade that makes
him remarkable. Ralph is a child of the Great Depression and WWII veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He has raised his family and survived the
death of his wife.

Ralph runs five miles three days every week, rain or shine, hot or cold. I see him out there in the summer and the winter, even when he has to
navigate his pencil-thin body around the snow. When I introduced myself to him one day, I told him he was a real inspiration. He responded
with the predictable humility his generation reserves for such compliments. His mind is clear, memory strong and wit sharp. We have a sort of
unspoken agreement not to stop for too long because both of us can be gas bags and talk forever. So, we slow down, say a few words and continue
with our routines. One day we did stop and talk for a while. What a joy!

I asked what he thought of the state-of-things these days, and he responded with the confidence and resolve of the survivor-generation of which
he is a part: "We've seen tough times before. We'll be okay. It'll all work out. It always does." We talked a bit longer and parted our ways, me
walking, Ralph running and reading.

You see, Ralph carries with him song lyrics on index cards to memorize as he runs. He volunteers to play music at nursing homes. Ralph told me
he does this to keep his mind active and to always have a song in his heart. A survivor of the Great Depression, war veteran and widower still
smiles, sings, exercises his fit body and studies to keep his mind going.

His life is a lesson for anyone going through tough times. What do you do to get rid of your stress? How are you giving back to others? What are
you studying to grow? It's unlikely you will feel the ill effects of stress when you burn the energy exercising. It's difficult to feel sorry for yourself
when you're doing for others. And it's impossible to be negative when you are filling your mind with new ideas.

When I see Ralph later this week I may tell him I wrote about him, but he would probably not see the big deal in doing what has become his life
for the past 85 years. He might smile and grind out a few more miles while learning a few more lyrics.

Good Economic News

This new feature will share with you some of the latest good economic news—share with others.

  1. Bloomberg: "The index of U.S. leading economic indicators rose in May for a second straight month, reinforcing signs that the worst
recession in five decades may end this year…"
  2. Housing starts showing new life: up 17.2% from April to May.
  3. U.S. consumer confidence reaches a nine-month high. This is significant because confidence precedes spending and consumer spending is
    70% of the U.S. economy.

Good news, like love and hope, is better when you share it.

The Green River Arts Council (GRAC) is committed to bringing a variety of arts to Green River and making it available for
everyone in the community to enjoy.   With this purpose in mind, GRAC is inviting local citizens to participate in several
projects planned for this coming summer.

The Arts Council and the Green River City Council have approved the purchase of a folk art painting of Green River by
Eric Dowdle. This is an exciting opportunity for the community.  Dowdle is an artist who graduated from Green River
High School and who now lives in Utah.  And the best part is that each of us has the opportunity to be included in the
painting.

Eric highlights local businesses and people from the community in his paintings.  He talks to historians, to local groups and
individuals and then wanders around town taking photos of buildings and landmarks.  In the Green River painting, he will
include Castle Rock, Tollgate Rock, the river, Flaming Gorge Way, and more.  After getting to know a place and gathering
a wealth of information and photos, he makes a charcoal drawing of the location and loads the image onto his webpage.
At that point, people can go to the webpage and register to be in the final painting.   Because of his connection with Green
River, Eric will do the painting of Green River at half the cost he charges other cities.  The current plan is to have the
original hang in City Hall.

You can add yourself, your family or your business to this original painting. There is a charge, but you will receive a
signed and numbered print when the project is finished.  Here’s how to be a part of this unique piece of Green River history:

Choose your favorite photo of yourself or your family.  Business owners can submit photos of their businesses or their
business logos.

Go to www.dowdlefolkart.com to register.

The deadline to be a part of the painting is in September with the unveiling of the painting and distribution of signed and
numbered prints taking place in mid-December.  We will keep you posted as we set the dates.

Eric is an excellent artist and has painted U.S. cities such as Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, New York and Washington,
D.C., and also world cities such as London, Paris and Jerusalem.  Check out his website for more images including one of
Yellowstone Park with Old Faithful Lodge and Geyser, waterfalls, tourist, and of course, bears.  Eric credits his high school
art teacher, Rudy Gunter, for turning him into an artist.

The 2010 Census is Coming and it is Safe

What should I do?
Fill out the questionnaire mailed by the U.S Census Bureau in March 2010.

Why is the Census important?
The Census is important because complete and accurate Census data is critical to our ability to serve the
people of Green River The data helps us identify our population and their needs and allows us to secure
our share of federal funding to meet those needs.

Who does the data help?
Everyone!
Over 200 agencies make their funding allocations based on Census data. Some examples where
federal funding is allocated are: educational agencies, Head Start programs, Women, Infants and Children
(WIC), Public Transportation, Road rehabilitation and construction and emergency food and shelter.

The Sweetwater County Joint Travel and Tourism Board hosted the 2nd Annual “REACH” Awards on May 15, 2009 , recognizing Rare and
Exceptional Achievements for Customer service in Hospitality. “Without quality employees providing outstanding customer service to the
guests of
Sweetwater County , all of the efforts of the board would be for not. There isn’t a marketing or public relations campaign that can
replace that. These individuals truly are the backbone of the tourism industry and we feel it is important to recognize their service,” said
Jenissa Bartlett, Executive Director of the Sweetwater County Joint Travel and Tourism Board.

Alan Dubberly, Deputy Director of Wyoming Travel and Tourism was this year’s guest speaker. Mr. Dubberly spoke on the impact that the
travel and tourism industry has on
Wyoming ’s economy. The “REACH” Awards recognize five categories of nominees, Best Hotel
