SBA DISTRICT OFFICE LAUNCHES

SMALL BUSINESS HOTLINE

WYOMING – The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Wyoming District Office launched a Small Business Economic Hotline in response to the concerns raised by the state’s small business community during these uncertain economic times.  This hotline is to give small business owners a single phone number to call with business related questions.  Calls to this phone number will be returned promptly by SBA staff in Casper .  The phone number is 307-261-6505.

“Small businesses across Wyoming have raised concerns about ways they can better survive in today’s economic situation,” states Steve Despain, SBA’s Wyoming District Director.  “I believe it is critical to provide access for our small business community to get the answers they need on questions relating to surviving in this environment.  Business experts from the Small Business Development Centers , and SCORE can advise them on ways to enhance their marketing plans, re-evaluate their business plans, and look for new sources of financing.  Most of these services are free of charge and are available across the state.”

SBA Small Business Hotline:  307-261-6505

Marketing…How Best to Spend Your Time & Money
By Mark Atkinson,
Rock Springs Region Director

"How can I spread the word about my business without the expense of a major marketing campaign?" Michelle, Rock Springs .

I love it when someone asks this question since there are so many things one can do without spending a lot of money.

Promotions are those "things" and using them is critical for success. Promotions should be run often and once they are, small business owners should gather data to assess their effectiveness. Then do it again. In other words, promoting a Wyoming small business should be viewed as a cycle or process.

It is not necessary for a Wyoming small business owner to give something highly valuable away for free (necessarily) in order to run a successful promotion. For a list of basic promotional ideas, check a document on our Web site (www.wyomingentrepreneur.biz/) called, "15 Ways to Promote Your Wyoming Small Business." Go to the Forms and Links -- open the left and download the document.

The grand master of promotions may be the Disney Company. Although hardly a small business, Disney has a successful campaign "What Will You Celebrate" promotion (www.disneyparks.com). During 2009, a visitor to a U.S Disney Theme Park may pass through the front gates for free, on their exact birthday. Normally a one-day passport (Disney's name for a ticket) costs $59.

The Disney company understands the promotional process and likely has fairly solid ideas for 2010, 2011 and beyond. Wyoming small business can use the same process by habitually scanning for consumer trends in their respective industry and responding with promotional ideas to induce sales.

Every Wyoming small business owner should consider using the Wyoming Market Research Center's free services. This group of professional researchers can assist the owner in capturing critical market information that leads to targeted and effective promotions.

A blog version of this article and an opportunity to post comments is available at www.wyospace.com.

Boo Bash—Spook-tacular!!!!

The Sweetwater County Board of Realtor’s Charity Committee hosted a fun-filled evening October 25th at the Green River Hampton Inn & Suites. Committee Chair Amy Baucum, Sales Associate for Green River Realty, said, “The event was not only to have a good time but it also helped them raise funds for several charitable causes.” The Committee has raised over $9,000 this year which will go to help out several causes in Sweetwater County ; Food Banks, Green River and Rock Springs Youth home, by way of UW backpacks containing personal goods, Green River Fire Department and more.

The highlight of this year’s Boo Bash was a skit competition. This group took the challenge very seriously, all of those competing made or rented costumes; makeup was so good that that you really didn’t know who was behind the KISS face paint; and the dance steps were fantastic. All in all it made it very tough for the Judges to come up with a 1st Place winner—every one of them did a great job. Castle Rock Realty, blew the crowd away with a KISS tribute complete with band equipment and fans tossing out underwear; Northern Title’s tribute to the Monster Mash as a graveyard smash; Green River Realty went retro in 70’s beads and long hair and the rendition of “Signs”; Remax’s rendition of the “Leader of the Pack” and the Biker on the trike was priceless; Pioneer Title was so into their song that they almost lost their breeches; Rock Springs Realty sang their “howls” out to “Old Time Rock & Roll”; Brokerage Southwest had a super representation of the Village People and their salute to the song “YMCA”  almost had the construction worker loss his belt and pants; but the Judges chose Wyoming Land & Title for the overall winner. They started off with “Monster Mash”, went to “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, shifted into “The Witch Doctor” they then ended up with “Michael Jackson’s, Thriller”, complete with a crotch grabbing MJ. Bill and his staff had all the moves and words down! Wyoming Land & Title was given a traveling trophy which they will have to defend next year.

The winner for the Costume competition was Deven Ronning, her geekish outfit won her a $25 gift certificate donated by Wyoming Mortgage and a pink broom. Other Honerable Mentions went to Al & Faith Harris and Bruce & Elaine Harris.

Great job Charity Committee Members, Amy Baucum, Marie Colestock, Cheryl Jensen, Penny Trujillo and Marianne Emden.

“Wild & Free”…newest Art Council project
By Deon Quitberg

"Wild & Free" maquette table top size

Rudy with his larger than life size sculpture of "Wild & Free"

The Green River Art Council is working towards placing a great new bronze sculpture in our community. "Wild & Free" is a larger than life-sized horse sculpture by our own local, Green River artist Rudy Gunter. An ideal placement of the sculpture would be near the near Hampton Inn off of the Wild Horse Canyon Road, west of Green River and just off I-80. This is also the west entrance of the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Loop Tour. Before the Hampton Inn was built, Randy Walker , a Green River City Council man, Janet Hartford, Director of the Chamber of Commerce and others talked with hotel management during their groundbreaking and suggested a piece of artwork as part of their landscape plan. The idea was a motivation for the large sculpture that Rudy calls "Wild and Free" a portrayal of the wild horses living freely and untamed on high desert land. This could be symbolic of many living in the western United State 's wide open spaces, that we are freedom-loving. Rudy wanted to do something he had not done before in his experience with wild horses. The sculpture depicts a stallion that was spooked by a red-tailed hawk and rears up in response. This would be a great addition to the beginning of Pilot Butte Wild Horse Loop Tour, a road that winds its way across White Mountain where many wild horses make their home. The Bureau of Land management has a Wild Horse Program that manages the herds and has an adoption program to find homes for gathered wild horses.

Rudy Gunter grew up on a ranch in Kemmerer , Wyoming , between Fossil Butte and Cokeville. Wild horses were part of his life, and the first models for his artwork. In their mid-teens, Rudy and his brother Ronald caught a wild horse in the family corral. Their father was perturbed and made them turn the wild one loose. He did not want to contaminate his herd. Wild horses had very long tails and manes, were scruffy-looking, and of dubious breed according to his father. In school Rudy did 2-dimentional drawings of horses but didn't have the opportunity to do sculpture or 3-dimensional work. He read how Michelangelo used red clay, commonly used for sculpture and pottery. He remembered where there was red clay from the irrigation ditch at the ranch near Fossil Butte. Rudy wanted to try it. So he used that red clay to sculpt wild horses and let them sit in the sun to dry. It worked!

Rudy graduated from Kemmerer High School , and then graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He was a Green River High School art teacher for 38 years and influential in helping many students learn and enjoy art. After his retirement, Rudy has been busy with a number of art projects. He was one of the original founders of the Green River Arts Council and is currently a valuable member.

Rudy’s goal is to have "Wild and Free" ready for casting and fabrication of its parts by the Caleco Foundry in Cody , Wyoming in November 2008. To date, it has cost $6,400 by Moonscapes Company in Colorado for the armature and enlargement from Rudy's maquette. Bronze sculpture is an expensive endeavor, but long-lasting and well worth the effort.

A smaller version of the large sculpture, called a "maquette" is available to the public for purchase. Each "Wild & Free" maquette has a retail value of $2,400, but limited numbers are available from the Green River Arts Council for $1,650 each. Proceeds from the maquettes go toward the larger than life-sized sculpture, and are tax deductible through the Green River Community chest, a 501 (c)3, non profit organization. Those interested in purchasing a maquette can call Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Bethany Timmes at 872-0580.

Red Carpet Service Award

Red Carpet Award Winner for October is Tim Buman, White Mountain Lumber for his outstanding customer service.

Tim Buman was nominated by Pat Robbins.  Pat had these comments, “Tim provides outstanding service.  He walks me to the product I am looking for even if I’m not sure what I need.  He really knows his products and always provides great suggestions and alternate suggestions.  If he doesn’t have what I need, he orders it immediately”.  Tim receives a Red Carpet Pin, $25.00 Gift Certificate as well as other advertising.  He will be entered in the Red Carpet Person of the Year award contest to be presented at the Recognition Banquet in 2009.

If you know someone out there that has rolled out the red carpet for you, give them some well deserved recognition and nominate them for next month’s award!  Nomination cards can be found at the Chamber office and also at most of the businesses.

If you were the nomination person of a Red Carpet winner please stop by the office we have a gift for you too.  We appreciate you taking the time and effort to make sure someone’s efforts are noticed.

Maximize your Chamber Membership

It’s a no-brainer that joining your local chamber of commerce- and/ or perhaps an industry or professional association- is an easy way to establish credibility and get some recognition for your small or home-based business.

Don’t make the mistake, however, of subscribing to the “If I join it , they will come …” mentality.  Didn’t your parents always tell you that you get out of things what you put into them?  Well, this time, it’s true!

Leverage your investment in membership dues by being an active member.  The level and nature of that activity will, of course, depend on your specific personality and interests, but it could be the best time and money you’ve ever spent in terms of the return for your effort.

The win-win result is that not only will your business benefit, but your organization will be just that much better and more effective because of your input.
