Powell Plunge River Festival

The John Wesley Powell River Festival will be held August 26, 27, 2005. The Festival will begin on Friday afternoon with signups and orientation at 4 p.m. ! At about 5:30 p.m. we will begin serving a Cajun Shrimp Boil and Pasta Feed. This will be open to the public for a nominal fee and we will be serving shrimp boiled with sausage, potatoes and corn, Cajun spicy style!  For the folks who don’t like Cajun food we will offer pasta.   Free kids games will be available from 5-7 p.m. and the Kiwanis Club will be hosting their Duck Race.

The River of Fire will take place about 9 p.m. with boaters floating down the river and lighting cauldrons that will be placed just above the river to look as though they are floating. Entertainment for that evening will be the "Fireants" from Dubois, Wyoming, featuring Caribbean Cajun music. Check out the artists working on the their sculpting projects in the 1st Annual Life on the Green Sculpting contest. The artists have 24 hours to complete a clay sculpture. Unveiling of ten bronze sculptures will take place on Friday as well. The art work will be on display during the River Festival and then be place around town. They will remain in town for a year.

Saturday the events will begin at 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., at Expedition Island .  The 2nd annual marathon race, the Run With the Horses Marathon will begin at 6:00 a.m. , with a shuttle picking participants up at Expedition Island , Saturday August 27th. The Marathon will go across the Wild Horse Loop on White Mountain , hence the name.  You will be running across a self guided Loop Tour that 9 times out of 10 has wild horses frolicking along side the road. The race starts out at about 7,500 feet and ends in town at about 6,200 feet.  The majority of the road is a County maintained dirt road and the decline is not bad.  Aid Stations will be placed every two miles. Porta Potties will be placed throughout the course.   Entry fee of $50 includes the Shrimp Boil and Pasta Feed Friday night, band, a t-shirt and medallion for the finishing racers.

The Slalom competition will take place on the north channel of the Island and will have the same categories. Winners of those events will receive t-shirt medallion and a dinner ticket for the Shrimp Boil and Pasta Feed.

The Shake, Paddle and Roll,  is a relay race that  participants will begin at the Island and kayak and canoe to the FMC bridge, the next person will then take over on bike and ride on a course that is broken out for expert and beginners, the last leg of the race will involve runners. We have also included a Iron Man Category for those over achievers that would like to do the entire course on their own!

The Kayak Rodeo is a freestyle event that takes place on the river. Participants are broken into three categories, Professional, Amateur and Junior. Each participant is given two 30 or 45 second slots to perform tricks in the drops on the river. The judges average the scores and the highest score wins. Professional winners, both men and women, will receive a cash prize. Each participant receives a tee-shirt too.

We would like to invite you to our first annual Powell Plunge Brew Fest from 11-5 p.m.   Their will be several brewers available for you to sample their beer,  and for you to vote on your favorite.  Participants will be charged a $20 entry fee.  This fee would allow you to sample an unlimited amount of beer.  Judges will award 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners along with the People’s Choice Award.

Soul Purpose will be in concert for your enjoyment from 11-3 p.m.

A dog contest is an event that we know will involve the home crowd too. Dogs will be timed on fetching a stick out of the river and back to their owners. We are also including a land event for those water phobic dogs.

Knights of Columbus will be selling breakfast and lunch at the Island. The Bread Lady will be her too.

Awards presentations will take place on Saturday after the Kayak Rodeo competition ends.
