Run With The Horses
Marathon
2010 Date is August 20th & 21st!
Welcome to
the website for the Green River Chamber of Commerce 6th Annual Run
With the Horses Marathon, Half-Marathon and newest addition, the 10K.
In response to many suggestions, finisher medals will be feature a
unique running with the horses logo, and be three inches wide.
Additionally, Marathon & 1/2 Marathon participants will receive a thermax shirt. We are also working to having more food in the finisher tent.
As you may or may not know, we don’t have
a cut-off time so later finishers are common and welcome. Also due to the
increase in the number and types of runners, we will be increasing the support of
Search & Rescue and an ambulance to care for the runners. The Race will begin and end at the same location, Evers Park. We do offer a $5.00 DISCOUNT to the Marathon Maniacs
and members of the 50 State Club. We
are continuing the Shrimp Boil Dinner Friday night along with a spaghetti
dinner. Plan on being here early to
avoid the long lines. They move pretty quickly and the portions are generous.
Tickets for the Shrimp Boil Dinner are $20 per person, and ticket for the
Spaghetti Dinner are $10 per person. The dinner always sells out, so plan to buy
your tickets in advance. I have received numerous requests for more
detailed information about the race event, the town, it’s motels, and the best
way to get here. I hope the following answers your questions.

The Route:
Marathon Race,
1/2 Marathon and 10K are out and back courses starting and ending at the Island
Bridge. The course travels 2 miles through town to the Wild Horse Loop
road, then follows this road until the turn around point, where you will return to the island. The course is a graded dirt road. In the past, the
county has worked to grade it right before the race and spray it down with water
to keep down the dust. Please keep this in mind. There may also be horse
trailers, but we are asking that they drive slowly to keep down the dust and stay to
the side. This Loop Tour is a public
road, we cannot close the route to traffic.
Saturday morning will also feature a Poker Horse Run starting at
9 am
which also utilizes the Wild Horse Loop. Some runners will find they are sharing the route
with horses for just a short portion as riders will cross the route in two places.
Please be aware of this. Use the following link to review the route.
Map
of Route
Saturday morning check-in:
The
turnaround in front of the bridge leading to Expedition
Island
is near where you will begin the race. Parking will not be allowed in the block
of the Park, but there is a large parking area just off of 2nd South. There will be a check-in
camp trailer near the picnic shelter at Evers Park on Saturday morning. Please check-in before
the race begins. We want to
know who is on the course. There will be NO race day registration. We will close
online registration 14 days prior to the race. You will be welcome to register
on Friday, in person, before the race, but we will NOT be able to guarantee you
will receive a thermax shirt.
Weather:
The morning of the race can be rather cool, remember this is
a high plains desert. Cool in the morning (30’s and
40’s) and warm at the finish, especially for the runners coming in at
noon
or later. Temps at the finish can be in the 70’s to low 80’s. Plan for any
weather, up on the plateau you could face a pretty strong headwind. Rain &
lightening is not common but has happened.
Drop Bags:
If you need to leave clothing at the start, please place them
in your packet bags with your name and leave them with the volunteers at the
starting line. You can also leave items at
the aid stations, they will be brought in to the finish line as the stations
close down. You will be able to pick up your stuff at the refreshment table at
the finish line.
Aid Stations:
There will be aid stations every 2
miles with water and PowerAde. Later aid stations will also have m & m’s
and granola bars, and bananas. Porta potties will be at the starting line for
the marathon and mile 13 the ½ marathon. To your right as you cross onto the
island there will be a rest area for the runners. There will be snacks and
drinks. If it’s warm, sit in the river or rest under the trees in the park. If
you need a shower we can provide you with directions & free tickets to the
city Recreation
Center. There will be live music on the island from
11 am
to 5 pm and a Beer Garden Friday and Saturday.
Awards & Results:
If you have a plane to catch we
will hand out your awards at the finish line if you’ve won your age group. All
runners will receive a finishing medal, and the results for the Half
Marathon and Marathon will be posted on www.chamber.com
within 48 hours after the race
finish. There will be several age groups: Male/Fe 20-29, Male/Fe 30-39, Male/Fe
40-49, Male/Fe 50-59, Male/Fe 60 and up.
The Race Meals:
Vendors will be selling a variety of foods during the
day of the race. The Cajun Shrimp Boil, Spaghetti Dinner and/or food from the vendors is not included in your entry fee.
The Cajun Shrimp Dinner tickets are $20 for adults, and $10 for seniors and
children. Spaghetti dinner tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for children under
6 years. Tickets are available by stopping by the Chamber, or calling 307-875-5711. The Chamber Office is on the west end of town on
Flaming Gorge Way
just as you get off the exit ramp, it is in the park on the right side of the
road across from the gas stations and the street leading to the new Hampton Inn
and Wild Horse Loop Tour.
How to get to the
Island
: (packet pick-up/race beginning/finish)
Expedition
Island
is a small island on the
Green River
which runs through the middle of town. There are 2 main roads in town,
Flaming Gorge Way
which runs east and west, and Uinta Drive/HWY 530, which runs north and south.
There are 2 exits off I-80. Exit #89 to the west and exit #91 to the east. Both
exits lead you onto
Flaming Gorge Way
. There are 2 ways to get over the river to the other side of town and
Expedition
Island
. If you are coming from the east,
take exit #91, 2 exits past the
Rock Springs Dewar Drive
exit (approx. 12 miles). As you come down the ramp, you’ll come to a
stoplight that lets you go straight, this is
Flaming Gorge Way, or you can bear right which takes you over the overpass. This will become
Uinta Drive/HWY 530. Bear to the right and go over the overpass. As you come
down the overpass, take the right at the stoplight in front of the McDonald’s,
this is E 2nd S. Go up 3 blocks, you will be able to park in the dirt
area on the north side of 2nd south and walk down S 2nd
E. You’ll see the park and picnic shelter. There will be a camp trailer set up
near there for registration. If you are coming from the west, the exit ramp will put you onto
Flaming Gorge Way. Bear to the left and follow it down 4 blocks to South 4th West.
Take a right. Follow the road, bearing to the left under the underpass. Continue
straight, this will become West 2nd South. Proceed 4 blocks up and
park in the dirt area just east of the pedestrian walkway that crosses the
railroad tracks. Walk two blocks down S. 2nd E. to the picnic shelter and
there will be a camp trailer there, this is where you will check-in and pick up your packet (bib) and shirt.
Official check-in is between 4 and
8pm
. If you are running late, we’ll try and get your packet to you that evening
if you call my cell 307-297-0062.
How to get to
Green River
:
You can fly into
Rock Springs
Airport (RKS) via connections from
Denver or new connections from Salt Lake City. Contact the Chamber for more
information (307-875-5711).
Most runners fly into Salt Lake
International and drive the 175 miles east to
Green River. The trip is all on I-80 exit to exit. Take either Exit #89
for the west end or Exit #91 for the east end. It takes approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours. Speed limit is 75 mph. This
gives you a chance to see some beautiful and varied scenery. From the Wasatch
Mountains
of Utah and the Olympic Venues in Park City, Utah to the high plains desert of
Wyoming.
You can also fly into Denver
and drive north on I-25 then west on I-80 once you reach Cheyenne. The drive takes about 5 hours.
The Area/Town:
Green River
is a small town of approximately 13,000 people. It began as a Union Pacific
train stop on the famous Transcontinental Railroad. People are still employed by
UP and the various Trona mines west of town. Trona is bicarbonate of soda or
Soda Ash mined underground and used to make glass, detergent, toothpaste, among
other items. We are in the midst of an oil/gas boom so housing and hotel rooms
can sometimes be hard to find. A listing of the motels in the area are available
on the Chamber website. Please check out one of our major sponsors, the new
Hampton Inn/Suites for a beautiful place to stay. Expedition
Island
is so named because of the 2 expeditions of the Colorado River System which
began here and were headed by John Wesley Powell the one-armed explorer after
the end of the Civil War. A
beautiful place to visit is the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area south of
town. This is a reservoir 99 miles long and a mile wide located in both WY and
UT. You can rent a boat 20 miles south of town, or go fishing on the river and
Gorge for trout and Kokanee salmon. Horseback riding is also available in the
Ashley
National Forest
and maybe see some Bighorn Sheep. Visit the Red Canyon Overlook and have a
great meal. Plan your vacation to go along with the race. The Chamber can give
you more details and ideas.
