Award Winning Art on the Green

The 5th annual Art on the Green weekend, August 21st and 22nd   , revealed clearly why it has been the recipient of three awards, National, Regional and State commendations!  In 2008, Art on the Green received the National Parks and Recreation for the Midwest States Arts and Humanities Award, beating out such states as Colorado , Montana , Idaho and Utah .  This year, we received the Wyoming and Municipalities (WAM) Community Hero award for service to its community presented in May in Gillette.   This is offered to only five communities in Wyoming annually.  The most recent award is the Dorothy Mullen Arts and Humanities Award from the National Parks and Recreation Association for the Art on the Green Program to be officially accepted October 20, 2009 in Salt Lake city at the Salt Palace at the National Parks and Recreation 2009 Convention.

Eight new sculptures were unveiled at the annual event with a brief description of the artists’ vision.  These sculptures will be showcased around Green River for another year.  They will be installed in the very near future in their temporary sites.  If you love a sculpture and wish to purchase it, please contact Alyssa Krumholz with the City of Green River at 872-0580.  Gary and Pam Wolfe , 875-6409, are sponsoring saving the pelican sculpture, Maestro, by purchasing and placing it in a naturalized site near the river. They would really appreciate other citizens teaming financially to save this sculpture!

Thirty –eight artists participated in the sculpture and 2D events with $13,000 in prize money and the rights to copies received by Bryan Cordova for Dream Hunt and Travis Ivey for GR Trona Train.

People’s Choice of the Sculpture Showcase- “Flight Time” by Gary Lee Price

This year featured Kathleen Clymer-Clarkes theatre students producing live statutes whose practiced motionless fooled many people into believing they were of stone. The clever students were:                                                                               .

The artists gave praise and high marks to the friendly people who visited them and shared their enthusiasm for the new creations.  Many artists are planning on returning next year, already!  One artist, Mont Crosland, sent a warm note stating:, “ I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this year’s Art on the Green event.  You and your committee did a really good job of organizing and carrying out a very difficult task.  The crowds were good, the food was good and the sales were good.  I look forward to next year’s show”.  The volunteers driving carts to aid the public to the event were enthusiastic and cheerful.  The three auctions, silent auction, competitor’s silent auction and the live auction were supported by the community.  Wine tasting and cash bar were provided by The Liquor Depot, the reception produced by R& B Meats featured beautiful smoked salmon and buffalo sausage.  The Bluegrass Band, Rocky Mountain Express gave a party atmosphere to celebrate the artists’ efforts.

If you missed it this year, plan on coming next year and let the kid’s create at the Kid’s Corner, too!

Did You Know??????

In the 1400’s a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no
thicker than his thumb.  Hence we have ‘the rule of thumb’.

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented.  It was ruled ‘Gentlemen Only … Ladies
Forbidden’ .. and thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language.

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma Flinstone.

Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than the U.S. Treasury.

Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better.

Coca-Cola was originally green.

It is impossible to lick your elbow.

The State with the highest percentage of people who walk to work;  Alaska

The percentage of Africa that is wilderness: 28% (now get this…)  The percentage of North America
 that is wilderness: 38%.

River Festival Bringing Hundreds to Green River !

The 8th Annual River Festival was held August 21, 22, 2009, with a majority of the events
being held on or near the historical
Expedition Island . We have come a long way from the
1st event, a Kayak Rodeo and happy to have 50 folks show up from out of the area. This
year overall participation in the event was over 2,000 people.

The Run with the Horses Marathon bought over 200 runners…the majority from out of state
with thirty-three states beside
Wyoming represented. There were also four runners in the
military in
Afghanistan that “shadow” ran the race.  We also had an increase in local
runners due to the addition of the 10K. Twenty Runners from the “Anheuser-Busch 180
 Elite Runners” traveled from
Illinois to participate in the challenging run. Those runners
told our volunteers that this is the 3rd hardest race they have done…but they loved it!
Here is what one runner relayed to Ellen O’Neall, race director,
“This note thanks you for a
fine event…
Surely this has been my most unconventional Run; it was giddy and challenging
concurrently.  A big part of the draw of the Run are the people of
Green River : We highly advise
going to the dinner the night before; much is learned and we make friends instantly. Runners
such as myself are reserved, but the folks of GR would have none of it! … I commend you on
"amenities" too, you spared no change for awards, jackets, pins and cheerleaders at the finish!
Your police complements were happily accepted, since this writer sometimes gets lost! (Thank
you, GR PD!) The dinner was beyond expectation; volunteers piled upwards of 40-50 huge
shrimp on my plate, so the small price charged was a surprise. Keeping the
Marathon in
consonance with your Festival is very important; it provides a good psychological start for the
next day's elevation gain. The only detractor is logistics getting to your lovely city; you are a bit
isolated; but with what you offer, your event will grow. Conversely, I met people from many states:
at least 10+; many east of the Divide.  Again, a personal thanks for returning my 'lost' items;
that 'service' is not offered everywhere. You and your generous organization are indeed unique
and merit a 5-star comment on MarathonGuide.com.  Kind regards”, Barbara Austin.

Three local runners ran the marathon along with 114 other from over 30 different states.
Kevin O’neall, Ashley McNew and
Amber McNew  were three locals running our marathon
for the first time. They  got a first hand look at the hill having to run to the highest point on

White Mountain
and back to the Island .

Thirteen locals ran the Half Marathon with Brady Goyn with a time of 1:31 placing
second.  Brenda Gray from
Rock Springs finished third with a time of 1:40 .  Other people
from the area who participated were Isaac Harmon [5] 1:42, Rob Fisher [7] 1:48,
Terry Mink [13] 2:05, Dennis Pineda [14] 2:19, James Poyer [26] 2:24, Melinda Poyer [27]
2:24, Liz Putman [28] 2:25, Eve Henderson [29] 2:25, Barbara Kurzdorfer [36] 3:13,
Phyllis Johnson[40] 4:02, Linda Linger [41] 4:02.

Of the forty-five who ran the 10k run twenty nine were from the area.  The men
dominated the first five spots with Jarom Young winning this race with a time of 40:51.

Johana Dana was a close second with a time of 41:00.  For the seniors Richard
Mcdonald was third [42:12] and John Pawleska Thirteenth [51:07].  Ashley Annable led
the women with a time of forty-six minutes and a sixth place finish.  Others who
participated were: Quintin Johler [4th] 42:32, Joshua Hartford [7] :47, Kyle Mcdonald [8] :
48, Jackie Tramp [9] :48, Nick Mamalis [[11] :48, Art Castillo [14] :51, Hailey Annable [15]
 :52, Abby Goyn [18] :52, Ryan Poyer  [21] :54, Anna Hartford [23] :57, Bob Lever [26]
1:02, Michael Molineux [30] 1:05, Shantel Stevenson [34] 1:15, Jose Rendon [37] 1:25,
Jane Zuchisdorff [38] 1:28, Nancy Anderson [39] 1:28, Jodi Corley [41] 1:33, Kathy Bruce
 [43] 1:38, Sheryl Wilson [44] 1:38

Overall the event was a great success and the partnership with the Art Council and their
event, Art on the Green works well. Mark the date for next year’s event, August 20, 21,
2010!

A Benefit of attending the Monthly Luncheon

Jeannie Earhart Broker/Owner of Active Realty has been in real estate for 29 years.

There has been a lot of markets that we here in Sweetwater County have lived through
and we have learned to be patient in all markets.

The best markets are always the market we are living in right now.   This market is
especially good to buyers because of the $8000 the government will give on a tax credit.

WOW ……………..what a good deal this whole thing is!!!  That is why each market is always
so good if we just follow the money…………..it will happen for sellers, and for buyers who
have been hesitant to purchase because of the over inflated prices of the past.

At Active Realty we are committed to engaging with our customers and clients to help you
in every way to obtain your dreams.  We believe the beginning of wealth is home ownership.

Extreme Trail Challenge

This first time event for the River Festival was held in an empty lot just north of Evers Park . Some
folks thought the “Extreme Trail” would require a tough trail ride, but this is just another level of
western trail competition that tests you and your horse’s level of trust and the horse’s willingness
to be “Challenged”. Participants and their horses were required to negotiate the course of eight
different “challenges” consisting of a “Car Wash”, dragging a blue tarp around barrels, hill/water
obstacle, ride up to, dismount and enter porta pottie, ride through box with garbage, ride across a
teeter bridge and tarp and load horse into stock trailer. Ron and Deb Sundberg have entered these
events in other towns and thought this would be a good addition to the
River Festival . Ron put the
course together and then timed and judged the event. Points were awarded for how well your horse
went though each obstacle and also how quickly you did the course. Ten riders and horses completed
the course with 1st Place going to Kyle Sammons and his horse Lonesome of Rock Springs; 2nd Place
Deb Sundberg and her horse Jaque of Rock Springs; Lynn Huckaby and her horse Sagebrush from
Farson took 3rd. Entry fee was paid back to the winners and each receive a medal.

The Oil Can, LLC

Angela Gonzalez and her husband were young and getting a loan to purchase
her family’s business was difficult.  Finally, Larry Harkrader, past president
of State Bank, Green River , thought they would qualify for a Small Business
Administration 7(a) loan.  He was able to get a loan approved for them.
In February, 2001, the business was purchased from Angela’s parents.

One of the hardest things to overcome was the constant turnover in employees.
When Angela hired Curtis Hunt as shop manager she knew he would do a good
job and work hard to keep good help.  When Angela took over the business, she had five employees and still
has five employees. She did some remodel work and painted the shop herself.  Another problem was keeping
customers when they know a woman owns a business that would typically be reserved for males.

Growing up working in the bays with the guys taught her part of the business.
The other part was running the business and the book work.  Angela has two
years of college and a lot of experience from her former job at Trona Valley
Credit Union as a Branch Manager.   She is the sole owner of the business and
confident that she is fully capable of the job.  The Oil Can, LLC is a full service
oil and lube shop.  They do everything from changing oil to transmission flushes
and are able to inspect and maintain vehicles with the utmost confidence.  As an
added feature, The Oil Can also services window placements, chip repairs
and replacement of damaged window wiper blades.

Angela is a chamber member, has been on the YWCA board, participates in the March of Dimes walk and
attends the Red Desert Round-up.  She does all this and raises two sons ages ten and seven.

Angela would love to have you stop by The Oil Can and see what the shop looks like.  You will find her
shop manager, Curtis Hunt, at 1365 E. Teton Boulevard , Green River , Wyoming or call (307) 875-7557

A weekly look at Wyoming business questions from the Wyoming Small Business Development
Center, part of WyomingEntrepreneur.Biz, a collection of business assistance programs at the
University of Wyoming.

By guest columnist, Rodney Trahan, Streamline Enterprises owner
"Why do you advise me to meet with my accountant more than once a year and why is
it important to know my break-even cost?" Michael, Sheridan

Can you imagine the outcome if during an NBA basketball game the visiting team's coaching
staff was required to sit outside the arena without any contact with players until the end of the
            contest?

Do you think that the team would be at a disadvantage? Worse yet, what if the visiting team
was not allowed to look at the scoreboard to determine the outcome and amount of time
left in the game? Who would call the team in and run a special play to inbound the ball? Who
would substitute new players to take advantage of an opportunity presented by the other
             team's defense?

Can you imagine playing the game without knowing who is winning or how much time is
             left in the game?

Visiting your accountant only at the end of the business year versus once a quarter and
reviewing financial information monthly is like conducting business similar to the above
basketball scenario. An accountant will help compile financial information to help a business
owner know what the score is in the business game all along the way.

Doing this more frequently helps the owner know much sooner if something negative is
beginning to happen in the business.

A colleague of mine was visited by the owners of a new winery in

California

. They couldn't
figure out why even though they were selling so much of their product, they never had any
money left over at the end of each month.

Turns out they only calculated their break-even in the initial business plan and never revisited
it again until they visited with him a year later. The owners' actual costs differed from their
projected costs so they were operating under faulty assumptions. This popular business
became one of the 80 percent that fail within the first five years.

Wouldn't you rather find out sooner than later that you were selling your product or service
             for less than break-even?
